10 Reasons you might be gaining weight

10 Reasons you might be gaining weight

So you’ve been mindful of your eating and exercising on a regular basis for some time, but you’re still gaining weight or are unable to lose any at all. This can be extremely frustrating and confusing at the same time. So what’s the deal? The answer is that there could be other factors playing a role that you should consider. Here are the 10 reasons you might be gaining weight.

Dehydration

Yes, it always goes back to how much water you are drinking each day. Dehydration can cause your body to protect itself by retaining water; which will make you gain weight. Learn how much water you should be drinking everyday.

Hypothyroid

Hypothyroid is an issue that is close to my heart because my mother suffers from this health issue. The thyroid regulates your metabolism and if it’s slows down, so does your metabolism along with it; which causes weight gain. This is definitely something that requires a doctor’s visit and potentially medication to regulate.

Too much cardio

You’re probably saying to yourself, “what?” too much cardiovascular exercise can cause me to gain weight? Yes, it’s true. If you’re taking a spin class three times per week, you’re going to be a lot hungrier than if you hadn’t. Finding a balance of calories in and calories out can take some time. Consider incorporating some low impact exercise from the 10 best workouts for weight loss.

Down and out

If you struggle with depression, weight gain can most certainly be an issue. Whether you’re eating because you’re depressed or gaining weight from medicating the depression, it can be a struggle. Working together with a therapist and your medical doctor to find a balance is key.

Lack of sleep

Did you know that not getting your 7-8 hours of sleep each night can increase your hunger hormone causing you to make unhealthy food choices? Turns out lack of sleep gives you the munchies like smoking pot. Our bodies crave fatty comfort foods even more when we’re sleep deprived and also makes us lose all control with how much we eat. Bottom line; ensure you’re getting your much needed sleep.

Stress

When our minds and bodies are under stress the hormone cortisol is released; which increases the feeling of hunger even when we’re not hungry, causing overeating and stored body fat. Awareness is key when it comes to controlling stressors, so breathe through them as much as possible and recognize it before reaching for more food.

Too much salt

Yes, we need salt for anything to have flavor and also for proper brain function, but nowadays it’s overloaded in everything that we eat. When you eat too much sodium you retain water and become bloated; which doesn’t make anyone feel good about themselves. Regulate your salt intake by reading labels and buying reduced sodium products as often as you can.

Going out to eat too often

Everyone should enjoy a nice meal out from time to time, but it’s important to be aware of how often you do this. When you put someone else in charge of the ingredients you’re ultimately are going to eat, you can’t keep track of the butter, oil, fat or salt used to cook your food. In addition, it’s very rare that anything on the menu is as healthy as what you would make at home, but when you do indulge, here are 3 ways to eat healthy when dining out.

Not eating enough protein

You’re eating as healthy as you can but you’re still gaining weight? It could be as simple as you’re not eating enough protein in your diet. Protein builds muscle mass which keeps the metabolism going strong, but without enough protein your metabolism will slow and cause weight gain. Here are the 10 healthiest sources of protein you can eat.

Fake foods

It took me a while to realize that those low fat foods like cookies, fake butters and dairy products were just supplemented with more sugar that ultimately caused more weight gain. Instead, eat real foods, just in moderation and skip all the fake stuff.

Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Goal Setting

Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Goal Setting
Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Goal Setting
It’s that time of year when motivation is really beginning to lack and you know this to be the case because the large crowds which were filling your gym in the earlier months of the year have definitely died down.
You can have all the best intentions and the voice in the back of your head screaming to keep it up and continue to push through but sometimes life just gets in the way and the all the stresses prevent you from staying on track. If this or at least part of it sounds like something you can relate with then you are not alone and this article is a friendly boost to help you reach your goals…
In fact, goal setting is the highlight of this article, but there is something that we should first clarify…
Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Defining Motivation
What the heck is motivation anyway? Maybe if we define it and think about it with a little more depth, that alone will shine a new perspective on this entire matter.
According to Wikipedia, motivation is the energization of a goal orientated behaviour which is rooted in the basic need to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. Wow, read that sentence again and think about it in the perspective of weight loss or weight training.
Are you wanting to lose weight or build muscles to have a better appearance in your bathing suit? Or are you exercising and eating healthy because it makes you feel good about yourself?
This type of questioning is really the key to achieving success with your goals particularly if you can take your ego out of it. In other words, instead of just being about a rocking body focusing on the health benefits – how exercise and eating healthy can benefit you in preventing you from getting diseases (especially of the heart, plus others like cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis), having a better sex life, being able to think more clearly and have excellent memory.
So when setting up your goal you will want to continue to ask these questions…
Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Goal Setting
Now goal setting is the other part of the puzzle which will allow you to maintain motivation and succeed. You can now outline your goals by keeping the above in mind and then asking these questions:
Why do you want to eat healthier?
Why do you want to exercise more?
Why do you want to lose weight?
Why do you want to increase your muscle mass to fat ratio? (i.e. reduce fat and increase muscle)
With these answers you can now clearly define your goals, but there are some tips you should also remember. Be very specific with your goals, be positive, and be realistic too. Write these down. Some examples include:
“I will eat 5 smaller meals throughout the day spaced 2-2.5 hours apart.”
“I will focus on eating at least 4 natural raw fruits/veggies a day and I will eliminate 2 processed foods each day.”
“I will exercise Monday through Saturday and take Wednesdays and Sundays to do house cleaning and light walking as my form of exercise.”

Weight Loss Motivation Tips: Conclusion

Hopefully you had an “Aha” moment with this article and are ready now to use this wisdom to benefit you and your family when it comes to exercise and healthy eating. Remember we can always keep improving and challenging ourselves with how we exercise and how creative we get with our healthy eating, and in the end if you are not focusing on the benefits and the joy that this is giving you then you are not going to get out of it as much as you can be.
Now I’d like to ask you to leave a comment below letting me and all the great readers of this blog know at least one of your goals with this new mindset…

Weight Loss Tips: Is It Really All About Weight?

Weight Loss Tips: Is It Really All About Weight?
I’ll be completely frank with you, the #1 question I always get over and over again is that “I’ve been working out and dieting but I am actually getting heavier! What gives?”. Well this question is not without merit…
The marketing angle of so many “weight loss” products and programs is that you achieve success by losing weight on a scale simply because it is the easiest thing to measure. However, in my humble opinion this is the worst measure of your health possible! Why?
There are a number of reasons why most health experts and I believe the focus should not be on the weight because that simply is a trap for failure…
Fact #1: The More Muscle You Have the Heavier You Will Be
Obviously one pound of fat weighs the same as one pound of muscle, but if you are looking at two people who weigh 150lbs and one is 12% body fat and the other is 26% body fat who would you say is the healthier one?
With that said I don’t want you to get obsessed with body fat compositions either. One thing that was startling during my education in Kinesiology is that most body fat measuring devices have an error percent of +/- 8-12%! In other words, the device can tell you that you have 10% body fat when in actuality you have 22%!
Forget all these numbers they simply will lead you down the wrong path. You may be exercising and eating healthy but noticing that your weight is actually going up simply because you are gaining more muscle than you are losing fat. Let’s change this focus…
Fact #2: Focusing on Positive Is Always Better
The best and most effective advice I give all my clients is that you are much more likely to succeed if you focus on the positive.
In this case, the positive is how good you feel after your workout (Ok, well maybe after you have showered after your workout!). The same goes for how good you feel at the end of a day where you have ate super healthy.
Try and change your outlook on this and everything will change for the better, I guarantee it. This directly relates to my next point…
Fact #3: Psychology is Everything When it Comes to Health
Have you ever asked yourself why it is that you break down and eat processed, fatty junk foods? Are these foods giving you any nutritional benefit or enhancing the way you feel about yourself? Are you eating simply because you are bored? How can you replace these junk foods with healthy and tasty alternatives?
Think healthy food can’t be tasty?
Seriously? Come on, it’s the year 2010 and this excuse just doesn’t fly anymore!! Not with the variety of goods we can find at all the local supermarkets and grocery stores.
It’s time to take control and educate yourself with healthy recipe ideas, you can check out the healthy recipes section of this site or find a number of healthy cookbooks from Amazon.com for under $20.
I’ll be honest with you, if you keep pushing yourself to learn more about healthy recipes the more you will enjoy healthy food. I like chocolate, ice cream, and chips as much as the next person but ask any of my friends and they’ll tell you how surprised they are by how good my healthy dinners are so delicious!
Take a few weeks and experiment, buy tons of different spices and herbs, make fresh salsa and low fat salad dressings and you’ll be really happy you made the effort.

Conclusion: Weight Loss Tips – Is It Really All About Weight?

I hope you appreciate my frankess with you here. Focus on the awesome feeling you get after a killer workout and after eating a yummy healthy meal and just have fun with it all. This is the path to success with your health and you shouldn’t let anything get in your way!

How Much Should You Weigh?

How Much Should You Weigh? With champagne flowing, Christmas parties in full swing and the New Year quickly approaching many of us are committed, once again, to setting resolutions for achieving better health.
