I learned to actually measure appropriate proportions and how many calories were hiding there when I wasn't paying attention. I'm logging everything with MyFitnessPal until I get a food scale then I'll use both. I've always paid attention to food labels EXCEPT serving sizes. I realized how many Tbs of dressing I should use versus what I actually used. I learned a whole can of tuna is 1 serving. I also learned if I write it all down I lose the urge to snack rather quickly because I can SEE exactly what calories I've consumed and how many I have left. I've been logging for a while but I always cheated or snacked and forgot to log right away and would forget those empty calories. I've never done it with exercise for more than a few weeks. My biggest downfall was grazing all day and not eating appropriately at meal times. Then I think I'm having a healthy salad or tuna salad and not counting condiments which I always overused. I'm really paying attention now.
