Hello r/loseit, since we are getting close to the last leg of this challenge, I thought I'd share my perspective on how it's gone.
Though I'm about a pound or two behind my personal goal weight, I'm well on track to pass my challenge weight by the end of the last week, which I'm happy about!
My question to the mods and the community is, and this is 100% not intended as a mean Yelp review, but why don't we put more emphasis on strength training and diet in the challenges?
Cardio is a great tool, don't get me wrong, but it is not the only tool, and hardly the most effective tool for weight loss. The old "you can't outrun a bad diet" saying rings true again and again. Diet is king, and it's reflected by how difficult it is to consistently lose weight if you allow yourself even a single cheat day a week. We've all experienced the frustration of pushing through some incredibly exhausting workouts only to see the scale maintain itself a week later.
Given that most of us got here because we didn't control our diets correctly, wouldn't it be best to add more focus to them on our challenges? This is especially important if we want to keep the weight off. Wouldn't having weekly diet challenges between the teams be worthwhile?
Finally, there's the strength training angle, which I do believe is important in its own right. Strength training helps build or keep muscle on a cut, and over time, it fires up your metabolism continuously. Unlike medium-paced cardio (jogging), the benefits persist long after the workout is over. For those who need to lose weight, increasing our resting metabolic rate is very important and worth pursuing. Similarly, weight lifting might be safer on the joints of a heavier set person. Wouldn't having strength challenges be worthwhile too?
Again, no snark intended, just genuinely curious. Thank you!
