Thoughts on fading into calorie deficit?

Hi all - I'm planning to start losing in January. I know that "I've just started" posts are not allowed but I'm currently putting together a plan of attack so I hope this advice request is ok. The sub has been a goldmine so far, thank you to everyone for this amazing community! I can't wait to become an active member.

Right now, my TDEE is approx. 1800 (I get anything from 1750 to 1900 from different calculators so this is what I've settled on). So to lose one lb a week, 1300 would be the way to go.

But from tracking my eating in the last month I have learned that I regularly eat about 2200-2500 a day (weirdly I don't put on weight at this caloric intake, I just fluctuate 163-166...), so to jump down to 1300 would be a huge change to make all at once. And I don't want to get overwhelmed and discouraged and stop trying.

So I was thinking of starting in the first week of the new year with a daily calorie goal of 2000, and reducing it by 100 calories/week until I reach 1300 in mid-February. My theory is that this will allow my mind and body to acclimate to eating fewer calories. I'm not in any rush to lose these 25 lbs - I do want to make lasting lifestyle changes.

Has anyone else tried this and would you recommend it or do you think it's silly?
