Seasonal Affective - Back on track

I’m back on track!

Mid september, it started again: The hunger, the trouble maintaining calorie limits, etc.

I joined the Mario challenge hoping it would help me motivationally, but I tanked. I bailed because I felt it was unfair to be the one going up instead of down.

I wrote about it here, as it’s been recurring, getting worse year to year. A few people suggested I take a look at SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I was aware of it, but had not really given it much real consideration. I had spent plenty of time with introspection and my general mental health, family history, etc., and stopped there.

Some PubMed review on the state of SAD research shows a lot of things, but the only treatments with real traction were bright light therapy, and Vitamin D supplementation.

I am particular, and have to prove for real before I believe things, so I went about it my own way. The overhead light was replaced with a brighter, daylight, full spectrum spot light that aims at half of my desk. I also started taking a Vitamin D supplement, because I’ve not been outside much.

Three days later, and I felt in control again. There’s always a placebo effect to contend with too, but I seem to be back on track. In the last three weeks, I re-lost 10 of the 18 pounds I’d picked up, and am not struggling so much to maintain a deficit (Though US Thanksgiving was markedly over, today I’m 750 under. etc).

I’m still skeptical of myself, but I have hope that I have resumed the downward trend without much backtracking, and well ahead of last year’s results.
