In Defence of People Who Say "You weren't that fat" or "I'm worried you are too skinny now"

I have seen a few posts in r/loseit from people frustrated that others have made comments like "I'm worried you are too skinny" or "You weren't that fat before" I understand how frustrating this can be after busting your ass (sometimes literally) to lose weight, but I would like to offer a defence of these types of comments. I understand this may not apply to every situation, or to every commenter; at the end of the day, you know your situation and person's motives better than I.

Humans judge themselves relative to those around them - income, intelligence, height, weight, etc. North America, with Europe right on it's tail, has an obesity problem: a lot of people are overweight and obese. This has led to our perceptions of who is overweight / what overweight is, to change. Other humans are the best metric by which to judge how good/bad you are doing, so if a lot of people are overweight it is easy to conflate that 'normal' physique with a healthy one..

I don't deny there are some people who are jealous of your weightloss (Go you!). I don't deny that there are some people in denial about their own problems, trying to justify it to themselves by saying there is something wrong with you. And I don't deny that some people just need to shut up and mind their own business. But I don't think it is fair to immediately write people off for comments like those I mentioned, because it may be out of conditioning or ignorance rather than maliciousness.

As a final comment, as I mentioned earlier, I was not there when the person made a comment. I could be wrong. And I am not saying that you wrong. I just think these mis-identifications and perceptions are good to keep in mind when discussing weight.
