So I was fairly fit as a teen and into my university years. Then I got a sedentary job and ate my way to obesity (5'10" and 250lbs). A bunch of friends were really into gaming so I would spend my free time after work sitting in my basement playing video games and eating.
However, my best friend always stayed active and fit and when I finally got fed up I asked him for help. He said he wasn't really a great resource, but if I wanted I could borrow an old bike from him and train with him for a road race over the summer in 2014. I borrowed the bike and started going for rides. I was completely garbage when it came to fitness, but I loved riding. So I decided I'd eat better to have more energy for riding. Then I started getting fitter, and bought a bike of my own. Then I discovered mountain biking and fell in love with that too. Then I fell in love with downhill riding, then I fell in love with enduro racing. Then I decided I didn't want to quit riding the trails in the winter so I got into fat biking.
Just from having a goal (to finish a bike race) I ended up eating better, tracking calories and training daily. My wife loves that I have abs, my dog loves the constant bike rides, but my basement gaming room has been...overrun?
Hands-down the best thing that's happened to me was Cory telling me to go for a bike ride. But damn, I could have bought a new car with the amount I've spent in bikes over the last 4 years and I pretend to blame him for all that.
One group of friends fed (no pun intended) into my growing waistline while another helped show me that both boredom eating and mild depression can be overcome by getting out and doing fun shit. Find that friend and hold on tight. He/she is a far better support than they even realize.
