The little things

I don't know about most of you but one of my greatest annoyances for the past fifteen years has been tying my shoes.

I'm not sure when it all started for me but at some point I started just settling for tying my shoes once and from then on it was just slipping them on and off rather than retying them. It was easier I told myself, no matter how much wiggling, shifting and pushing it required to get my foot back in there, at least I didn't have to bend over and cock my knee out to the side so that I could actually reach my own foot and tie my shoes.

I have managed to drop 53lbs this year, down from 293, and it hit me this past weekend. I did not have to cock my knee off to the side to tie my shoes! I had my leg perfectly straight and my knee was just under my chin as I tied them! It was such a moment of success for me. Sure the person in the mirror now looks a ton better, I have had to swap out every item of clothing I had previously, and my scale finally showed 50lbs lost, but my small moment of just gathering my laces and tying them like a normal person was the real thrill.

Now I tie them all the time, just to do it. It isn't the most glamorous moment in my life but it was something I always noticed I was forced to do for the last many years and I was self conscious about it. I think that is the real key to this feeling. I no longer have to be critical of myself for this. That is a darn good feeling! Hurray for small wins that really do equal big victories down the road!
