Earlier this year, my best friend, SIL, and I all got married within a month. My BF and I were in similar situations- we're both in the overweight but not obese category, we were both in highly stressful academic programs (scheduled to graduate within a few weeks of our weddings), and had to travel a lot for said academic programs. We independently decided, despite the fact that we both knew we were unhealthy weights, we would take the pressure off ourselves by not trying to lose weight before our weddings. In fact, I gained a bit and made my dress uncomfortably tight! We had our weddings and had a great time! When we received our wedding photos back, we both lamented that we weighed more than we wanted, but kind of laughed it off together. So much for looking like a princess, right? I'm sure this is something all women go through. We're happy with our lives, we shouldn't worry about something as insignificant as a bunch of pictures.
My SIL has been very fit ever since I met her. She's an avid runner, naturally eats very little, and runs triathlons for crying out loud. Since she was so far above average in this category, I never considered that I could be anything like her. She and her husband are also very conventionally attractive people. At her wedding, the photographer started a slide show during the reception of pics from the ceremony and some fun shots they had taken immediately after. She was so gorgeous. I just stared at those pictures and thought "I bet she will absolutely love her wedding pictures. I will never love looking at mine like I bet she will"
Since then I've lost 20 lbs! Still have more to go but I'm feeling great. It's been through simple CICO on MFP, though I recently got a fitbit that has really motivated me to hit the gym more. I even started weight lifting, which is something I never thought I'd do! I still probably won't run triathlons, but the goal wasn't to be just like my SIL. The new goal is to love the body I'm in.
Did anyone else have a similar experience? What was your tipping point? When did you realize you could set a goal that was actually achievable? You all have been such an inspiration for me and I am so thankful for all the support you have provided.
