M40 - 28%BF to 10%BF in one year

I thought I’d share my story briefly since this community has been such an encouragement to me. I turned 39 September 2017 and for all intents and purposes was doing fine. Great job, wonderful kids (3) and married to an amazing woman for 17 years. That being said, I had serious dad bod and hated it. I was 220lbs and 28%BF so, I made a decision and put sticky notes all over the house, refrigerator, liquor cabinet, etc. The signs simply said “15x40” and stood for 15% Body Fat by 40 years old. I have NEVER been an athlete so, for once in my life I wanted to feel what it was like to be that way.

I stared with CICO but then began running 2-3 times per week. I was SUPER SLOW and knocking down 11-12 minute miles. I could only run 1 mile when I started!

As I started feeling better I started doing Insanity Max 30 in my garage 2-3 days per week. THIS is when something started happening. I was showering one day early this summer and my wife said “wait! Turn toward me... is that your top abs I see!?” I looked down and she was right! I was starting to show abs!

This was roughly June 2018. I had been using a Fitbit Scale with body fat measurements and it said I was closing in on 20%! This is when I kicked it into high gear.

I started doing insanity max 30 4-5 days per week and doing a long run (5 miles) on the weekend. I did this until August.

At this point I was one month away from September 2018 and turning 40. The scale at home said 19% and I felt stuck.

That being said, I kept telling myself “trust the process” and kept with it. The week prior to my birthday my wife invited me to go with her to a Warrior Sculpt class at a lifetime fitness we are members of locally. I said yes and had a blast!

As we were leaving the class my wife pointed out the club’s scale/body fat zone. I saw it and felt somewhat defeated. Had I done a great job so far? Yes, my scale at home said I was sitting at 18.5% BF. That being said I was about to turn 40 and not hit my goal of 15% BF.

I mentioned this to my wife and she went straight to google. In under 30 seconds she said “Get on that scale. Apparently Fitbit can be as much as 5-6% off on body fat measurements and this brand (can’t remember) is accurate to within .3-.4%.

So, I stepped on and it went to work. Within seconds it showed the weight I was expecting (194lbs) and then began to calculate my body fat. It took about 30 seconds and I stood there shocked. The screen said 14.7%. I didn’t believe the results so, I stepped off and did it again.

Same weight (194lbs)... 30 seconds later the screen showed my body fat... 14.6%.

Needless to say I was shocked. I started tearing up right there on the scale. I was overwhelmed that I had done it. I hit my goal of 15x40!

I’m sharing this with you because I learned 3 valuable lessons over them last year:

1- trust the process. If you simply do what you should more often than you don’t you will see results.

2- set a goal and make it public. Every time people came to our home they would notice the signs and ask about them. This created accountability; accountability I desperately needed.

3 - I am capable of amazing things. It’s now November and I am sitting at 10.7% body fat as of yesterday. I had no idea I could do this but, have realized that I (we all) are capable of more than we can imagine.

I hope this encourages you on this beautiful Sunday. To all of you “Thank you!” Thank you for your stories that got me to this point.

Tl;dr - 40(M) worked for a year to go from 28% body fat to 14% body fat and learned lessons along the way.
