I’m heavier than I was last month and I’m freaking out, please talk some sense into me.

I’m kind of discouraged. I weighed myself today after about a month of lifting for the first time, and I’m heavier than I was a month ago.

My workout plan is for a slow cut. My objective was to lose weight slowly and sustainably. Not 2lbs per week, more like around 1 pound. This is done by lifting heavy 3x a week, seeking to maintain as much muscle mass while burning fat.

According to the plan, this is achieved by eating a number of calories that equals 12 times body weight in pounds. (12 times starting weight of 207 equals 2,450 calories)

I weighed myself today and I was 214, where as I started around 207.

I should mention I weighed myself right after dinner, because I was at my uni and it’s where I have access to a scale. I drank tons of water throughout the day (About 1.5L or 1.5 quarts) and I was wearing jeans. I also had some junk food last night (sodium) but it was all within my calories.

Could it be that I’m 7 pounds heavier than last month because of my jeans, food, drink and water retention because of last night’s sodium?

I should also mention that last month when I weighed myself I was wearing nothing but boxers and it was first thing in the morning, so I hope this is why I’m heavier. I honestly have felt my clothes fit a bit looser and I think I look subjectively a little skinnier. Can water, food and clothing really add 10 lbs of extra weight?

Are my calories OK? I’m a 6’0 male. 20 years old. I really don’t want to starve myself or eat 1,800 calories a day. I want my journey to be enjoyable, even if it’s slow. That being said, I want there to be progress for real.
