Background:
I've been putting on weight ever since I moved to University at 19. I went from living with my mother, who always bought fresh veggies and constantly supplied me with yummy, healthy food. I don't know what I weighed then, but it was healthy (not athletic or skinny, but also not overweight). Then I moved into a residence with no access to cooking facilities, and the vegetables in cafeteria were usually not fresh or very appetizing. Over three years of living in residence my veggie consumption went way down, and my "fast food" consumption went way up. Caf smelled like a fast food restaurant, and I went from finding it appallingly disgusting and not enjoying things like McDonalds burgers to craving that type of food.
Now I'm 24 years old and in my second year of graduate school. I make my own food, have a kitchen, am getting married, and it's time to improve. When I was 19 I was wearing women's size medium, this fall I had to try on clothes in the XL section. That was a bit of a wake-up call.
Timeline:
Nov. 21-Dec. 21: Intermittent fasting - Start losing weight, start tracking weight, learn not to overeat, establish healthier eating habits
Dec 21: wedding dress fitting
Dec. 22-Feb 22: Maintain weight (try to eat healthier and exercise without a calorie deficit)
Feb 22: wedding
Feb. 23-?: Work towards ideal weight and continue working on healthy habits
Plan:
I am very stressed most of the time, and I am a comfort eater, so that is the first thing that I am working on. I've been working on that for a while, by not bringing unhealthy food into the apartment, minimizing snacking, etc. I don't like counting calories - I find it stressful. Thinking about food in terms of calories and measuring exact portions just doesn't work very well for me. I get pleasure from food and I'm not prepared to give up that pleasure right now. I also can't afford to be hungry all of the time, because I need to be able to focus on my academic work.
For 30 days I am going to try intermittent fasting, and only eat between 1-7pm. It sounds like people who do this get over the hunger cravings in a few days and are able to be energetic and productive during the fasting period. I'm counting on this. On day 2 right now and with an hour and a half before my feeding window begins, I'm fairly hungry but okay. I don't have a bathroom scale yet, but I'm planning on buying one next week.
Any advice or experience to share? Encouragement? Thanks for reading!
