Of course, that's kind of a broad statement, but it just dawned on me that there is so much food out there that is nutritious and good for you, AND tastes amazing. Does brown rice really taste that much worse than white rice? How about brown bread compared to white bread?
The reason I started thinking about this was because tomorrow is my cheat day, so I bought some mini-oreos and a bag of chips to eat tomorrow. For today though, my lunch was a salad: quinoa base, with sweet potatoes, beets, spinach, and some grilled chicken mixed in. As I was eating it, I couldn't help but think to myself how delicious it actually was. The beets and sweet potatoes gave it such a pleasant flavor in every bite, and the quinoa added a satisfying crunch to the meal. In total it was, I'd say about 400 calories at MOST, which is well within my calorie budget, and yet it left me so satisfied. I realized I was no longer craving the potato chips and the oreos that I bought for tomorrow, or even pizza or cheeseburgers or ice cream or anything. My stomach likes what I eat, my taste buds like what I eat, my body and mind like what I eat, so why do I ever need to eat junk in the first place, where all I'm really satisfying is my taste buds?
I don't mean to brag, but I've personally found a lot of success in sticking to my diet, and I don't think it's because of motivation or willpower or discipline, though it did take some of that at first; I think I just LOVE the food that I'm eating now. Whether it be eggs, grilled chicken, broccoli, greek yogurt, protein shakes, or the occasional banana, the foods that I'm eating now taste just as good as any fast food to me, and unlike fast food, it leaves me feeling better afterwords rather than worse! When I used to eat fast food, I'd end up either still feeling hungry, or totally bloated and sick. Some chicken with a serving of vegetables, however, leaves me feeling truly full, without the bloated feeling.
I'm not making a sacrifice of any kind by eating healthy. I admit that cheat meals and cheat days are nice from time to time, but I notice that by the end I kind of just feel awful, and want to do nothing than get back on track with my diet. If it tastes good, and it feels good, and it's good for me, there's nothing wrong with it. I think we could be a lot more successful in sticking with good food choices and losing weight if we thought of it less as going on a diet, and more as giving ourselves the opportunity to indulge in delicious, whole super-foods, and not only losing weight but feeling better all day.
What do you guys think? Do you have a hard time sticking to your diet, or are you genuinely enjoying it?
