I'm going to share something that has been working well for me and it's kind of a how to on a few things. Losing weight is hard, you have to give up a TON to do it. Food, alcohol, habbits, social outings, it can be really hard. Especially when you're at a table out or the entire office is going out for drinks after work and you need to be there because it absolutely helps your career (read, networking, not binge drinking), it's hard to be the only person who has to order water and then the questions and so on. But here's some help on how to drink while dieting.

1) Don't. If you can avoid it, don't. It's just that much easier. But I get it, it's nice to have a drink on a friday after work or in your hot tub with your spouse, I get it. If you can avoid it, avoid it, but when you can't, read on.

2) Ditch beer, cider and wine. The problem with these isn't the calories, it's the nature of consumption. They're like potato chips, you never have just one. It's always 1+.

3) Hard liquor is your friend now. But not straight. No, now you're a sipper. Scotches, whiskeys and bourons by the glass are great. Typically you can check in something like MFP for their calories, add it easy and call it a night. And these three are great because you don't have 6 glasses of scotch in a night. It's usually one, maybe 2.

Realize, this may still be 30% of your daily caloric allotment. Yea, that's just the way it is.

But let's say you and oak don't get along. That's fine. Vodka tonics and Gin and tonics are where it's at. Diet tonic is 0 calorie so you can actually enjoy 2 of these.

But let's say these still aren't your thing. That's fine, I've always known G+T and V+T as the symbol of a full blown alcoholic, so I've never liked drinking them. I also can't drink tonic, it's gross. You're like me and you like margaritas, whiskey sours, things that are fun, sweet and interesting. Things that have a lot of flavor and TONS of sugar.

That's okay, we're finally getting to the meat of the post here. These can now be your go to drinks. But you can't have them out at a bar, but in your backyard, these will be your new go to's. And you're going to fall in love with these drinks as well long term too.

You are now a mixologist. You make your drinks by hand, the hard way. And you're going to have a blast doing it, because you get to drink and lose weight.

"But i don't know how to make a whiskey sour!"

It's easy, it's whiskey and sour mix. The sour mix is how they get you though. Normally it's some store bought shit that they use in the restaurants, bought by the keg. It's a ton of white sugar mixed with a metric fuck ton of acid. It's bad for your teeth and it's a ton of calories and you have no idea what you're getting or how it was made. But at home, it's easy. And you can even prep these in advance since most of this stuff will last a while in the fridge.

1) Whiskey - your choice, 2 oz.

2) Juice of a yellow lime- the whole mine, should be around 3/4-1oz of juice there.

3) Juice of a green lemon - same as the lime.

4) Simple syrup - 1 oz

4a) You now make your own simple syrup. 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, heat it on low until the water is clear, throw it in the fridge. Don't buy this, it's so easy to make and it'll last in a fridge for about a month.

5) Egg white, just the white, break it in.

6) Shake

7) Pour over ice.

I've saved this recipe in MFP and use it regularly, 200 calories. I took it a step further, I keep my own homemade sour mix on hand. Take a jar, fill it 1/3 up with simple syrup. I fill it 1/3 with yellow lime juice and 1/3 with green lemon juice. Sour mix, ready to go.

The real beauty of this, it's ready to go whenever, you know exactly what you're drinking and it'll be the best sour mix you've ever tasted. Not too sweet, not too sour, none of that acidic bite, just the right balance.

Now to expand on this: tons of drinks call for simple syrup or sour mix. A Tom Collins, margaritas, mojitos and more drinks than is worth naming. You can find one here. Take it a step further. Want a flavored simple syrup? Great! Take the simple syrup you made throw whatever fruit you want in there. Give it a week to infuse. Strawberry, pomegranate, blue berry, go nuts! You now know exactly what you're getting in your drinks, your drinks taste better and you can have one on occasion.

At the end of the day there's only so much you can give up in it's entirety before you go completely crazy and just lose your motivation. I now make my own simple syrups, sour mixes and my friends beg me to make them cocktails because mine taste so much better than whatever they were drinking and I can have a drink and still lose weight.
